Taking out the Troll Trash - 2014 Edition
- In the years I've watched this nutty place, it's always had an ebb and flow. I'm not sure it's risen to Stormtrooper levels, but with the company in its current state, it stands to reason the forum is more intense than ever. Still, there's a tremendous amount of help being offered. Members have been doing some amazing things. The devotion as passionate as ever. Stick around! The story is far from over.
If you only had a clue, how many reported posts we receive, where "insult" is the reason, and not one moderator could find cause. As for those who think there's favoritism, as has been said too many times now;
Anyone can contest their infraction, and if deemed undeserved, it is reversed.
Not sure what else I can tell you, that will convince you of the truth, other than making everyone mod for a day, so they can view it themselves. At least half those infracted complain of an injustice. "We didn't do anything about the other member involved" (we'd never tell, it's none of their business), pointing to other bad behavior (never having reported it), or simply tossing a variety of insults our way. Sometimes, a member acknowledges they're wrong, turns over a new leaf, even occasionally becomes a good friend. That's why we do it. For CrackBerry, what it's done for us, and what it continues to reward us with. The Modfia wants this place as healthy and prosperous as possible, because we love it! To think we would put one member above the good of the site, is to not know your moderator and administrator team at all.
EDIT: Mark Richardat's words though....some of us passed this point long ago, and had this realization....but for each one of you who has not.......almost every single one of you at some point is going to read something...read it again...look up from your screen and realize: the spin has gone completely off the crazy train.
You should just lol! :-) !!!!Last edited by Elite1; 04-09-14 at 06:34 PM. Reason: Repaired [QUOTE] tags

If a moderator were to get out of line... a report or complaint will force the others to review the response too. Moderators can receive infractions too. They're not invulnerable.
Unfortunately... too many people use the "they're not supporting all things BBRY" as an excuse for reporting as a method of reporting trolling. Just cuz it's something you don't like to hear, doesn't make it trolling.04-09-14 03:40 PMLike 7 - I have a suggestion for cleaning out some trolls and it wouldn't require any of the moderators time. Give the OP of the thread the ability to ban or prevent certain members from posting in their thread, should they choose to do so. Some people just cant understand that they are unwanted and unwelcome in certain discussions and despite making it painstakingly clear, they just don't go away and only antagonize the other members.
We had a thread going for more than 8000 posts that was for the most part all well and good until certain individuals showed up. As the OP, I had other posters/members asking me why I wasn't doing something to get rid of the offenders. Alas the only option is to "report" the offender(s) to the mods. Personally I can't be bothered with doing some as juvenile as that. I figure the mods get enough of that nonsense already.
It sure would have been nice to just toss the trolls out of the thread and be done with it though. No fuss, no debate, just over and done with. Problem solved.
Perhaps a no shoes, no shirt, no couth policy is all that is needed in most cases. The OP doesn't want you on the thread, you're gone. Too bad, so sad. Soon the trolls would have no threads where they are welcome and they would begin to perish as the law of natural selection intended.04-10-14 08:43 AMLike 0 - kbz1960Doesn't MatterI have a good idea who you're thinking of and you're wrong. A difference in thought or opinion does not a troll make. I figured this thread would get lively again lol.pantlesspenguin likes this.04-10-14 09:18 AMLike 1

I really think that the report button and the ignore list are two tools that are great for the CB user. Using the report function is not juvenile at all, and it's definitely not nonsense. Mods can't be everywhere at once. Although CB has several mods, not all can be online at the same time, or looking at the same threads. If you see trolling going on, that doesn't mean that the mods see it and are just overlooking it. A report gets their attention that something is afoot in a thread. If people are indeed misbehaving, they'll be dealt with.
The other possibility is the good ol' ignore list. If you see people that you serially don't agree with, put them on your list and you won't be bothered with their opinions again (unless their post is quoted). I have quite a few people I don't agree with more often than not, but every once in awhile they say something that gets me thinking. I'm sure it surprises them when they get a like and/or thanks from me too! It's because of that, that I don't want to put anyone on my ignore list. I don't want to miss out on any pearls of wisdom from someone who I might deem an unlikely source.Last edited by Elite1; 04-10-14 at 11:08 AM.
04-10-14 10:18 AMLike 5 - I don't think this would work, either. It would hamper meaningful discussion. Any time someone says something the OP doesn't remotely agree with, even if it was just a difference of opinion stated in a logical way, the OP would have the opportunity to silence them? It would be fine if you just want to hear from like-minded individuals and have a lovefest instead of discussion, but it would diminish the quality of CB. Soon all that would be left would be threads with post after post of the same opinion. I know that sometimes I'll be reading a thread that already has a bunch of replies and I'll be reading through with one idea of how I feel about the subject in mind. After reading some opposing views, sometimes I'll come out of the thread with a completely different outlook thanks to the multiple opinions offered! I love that!

As far as the love fest threads, I'd propose that there are plenty of those anyway, whether the OP wants it or not. I expect any threads where the op is kicking all the dissenters out, would become very boring, very quickly and would die a quick death on their own.
I also did not mean to suggest that the mods aren't doing enough or are allowing trolling. I have zero issues with how the mods choose to do what they do. The part I find juvenile is the reporting in and of itself because you have a problem with someone. Reporting inappropriate subject matter and spam is another matter entirely. Running to the hall monitor, which according to the mods posts above happens all too often, is juvenile in my book.kbz1960 and pantlesspenguin like this.04-10-14 11:27 AMLike 2 - kbz1960Doesn't MatterWell I'd be all for an ignore feature that truly had them ignored. It is not just someone quoting a post that is the issue, it more that the trolls know if they quote a post in their reply, they are no longer ignored.

It should definitely be used for serious offenses, not just when you disagree with someone. Nothing good can come for users who abuse it. Even if they don't get warnings or infractions, I'd imagine it could turn into a "boy who cried wolf" situation where mods see reports from specific users and assume that they're simply tattling and not reporting a legitimate offense.kbz1960 likes this.04-10-14 11:56 AMLike 1

- The issue for an anonymous forum is that you have to take everyone at their word. People who write "lovefest" or "bashing" posts, could be overstating their points.
To be effective, any forum has to have differing points of view. What diminishes it is when someone with a different point of view is labelled a "troll".

Send every trollish post there, to be hacked off to pieces by anyone who's in the mood to eat some troll. It'll keep the rest of the board functional. Besides... Trolls make great chew toys, at times.bungaboy and anon5645485 like this.07-19-14 06:07 PMLike 2

Merry Christmas
CB10'n it....via da Z3012-21-14 03:47 PMLike 3 - Not much has been done on the FIRST posting/baiting front.
You might think so but I couldn't possibly comment.12-21-14 04:01 PMLike 0 - I'd say we could start by eliminating those that have recently started a thread only to have them closed within a few posts or those who've made fraudulent and subsequently debunked claims about the Priv.
