My friend has 5 small diagonal or plus signs in the upper right corner of her phone. She said ever since they were there the call on the other end sounds muffled. Any idea what this might be?

Probably treble or bass boost. Go to your phone, click the bb button, click options, you should be able to set those from there. Good luck.

just hit "L" to toggle it on or off. its the audio boost

Yeah, L sets the configuration for that phone call, settings in Options sets permanent defaults.
