I own a BlackBerry Bold 9000 with BIS, while my girlfriend owns a BlackBerry Bold 9700 without BIS. I have this intention to switch it with my girlfriend.

From what I understand, the procedure is gonna be like this.
    1. Backup Bold 9000
    2. Backup Bold 9700
    3. Wipe Bold 9000 (Optional)
    4. Wipe Bold 9700
    5. Reinstall OS in Bold 9000
    6. Reinstall OS in Bold 9700
    7. Restore Bold 9700 with 9000 backup file
    8. Restore Bold 9000 with 9700 backup file

The question is, when I backup a 9000, will it affect anything if i use the specific file to restore a 8900/9700 or any other BlackBerry..?

I don't believe it matters what device the file is specific to, I backed up my 8330 and restored the info on my tour, but who knows, I may have gotten lucky

This will work BUT, no need to reinstall OS's. Wiping the handheld will remove personal info and return the phone to it's original state. Then use the device switch wizard. Worked great, quick and painless with my wife and I when I gave her my old BB and got a 9700.

I went from 9000 to 9700... the only thing i didnt select was apps... it makes a 100% copy of your phone. Its very slick. It even sets backlight brightness, fonts etc.

As far as wiping phones.. just do a factory wipe of the handset unless you wish to update the OS.

Be sure you use Desktop Manager 5.0. It makes it so simple.

One more question. When i backup my bbm contacts, and switched from 9000 to 9700, will I be able to restore my bbm contacts? Since different phone has different PIN, from what i understand. Or do i need my contacts to re-authorize me..?

That one is a little more challenging. Fortunatly, BlackBerry has made the process simple.

Backup both before you start. Use the Switch Device Wizard in BlackBerry Desktop Manager. All of your data, settings and applications will transfer correctly including updating all of your BlackBerry Messenger contacts.

So, you are saying that i can easily switch back and forth, from 9000 to 9700, without troubling my friends to re-authorise me..?

you can probably just do the BBM 5.0 back up/restore feature to reload your contacts in BBM without going through the hassle of reauthorizing contacts.
