Does putting the 8350 into standby (button, or holster method) effectively stop the wifi from searching? This would be better than having to turn it off/on, as I use wifi at home/work.

Mine (8520) automatically connects when I leave it in standby mode, so maybe it doesn't? Could be a way to set it up, maybe if you change the wifi connection to Manual instead of Auto, then it won't connect unless asked to. Not sure though

No I don't think so that the standby mode switches the WiFi off...
