Now we have reached the end of the road - it occurs to me - what was the last BBRY phone that can legitimately be called 'successful' relative to the market?

Surely one of the BBOS phones?

Blackberry passport perhaps. They received 200,000 pre orders for the device and might have sold close to 1.5-2 million Inc. Passport SE. Everything else failed from Z30 to leap to classic to priv n dtek50 with dtek60 coming soon to the list. Marketing is the key and they suck at it.

    Yeah, 9900 for me too.

IIRC, BB had to build more of them because demand exceeded supply!

I really doubt it sold that many given its been out of production for a while and the quarterly sales we got in earning would have higher if that was the case.

You have to account for the growth in the market - in the post 500,000 units was excellent now that numbers shuts the hardware division down. However you can get the numbers from earnings calls.

Really, in the past they shipped 12-13 million units a quarter, stuff like that was the norm for them back then.

Wasn't it the Bold 9900? That's when BlackBerry was at thier peak and the 9900 was the latest phone that time?

2011. That's the same year the numbers started coming down.

Most people I know who had a BlackBerry owned a Curve 8520.

The 9900 was beautiful but was it really that much a success?

Their peak handset sales were something like 14 million handsets a quarter and it was around the time the bold 99xx phones were released. I am pretty sure.

    EDIT :

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/263395

That would seem to indicate the top seller was something like the bold 9700/9780/9650 and torch 9800.

So while the bold 99xx were my favorite and sold pretty well, those appear to be past the peak.

I live in Puerto Rico and at the time like 80% had the curve 8520 or bold 9700. In college I saw just about 5 9700 and hundreds of 8520. I think the 8520 was the best selling here. My first smartphone

In terms of brand perception the 9700 in late 2009 was the very best relative to the market in the modern smartphone world. Apple had just released 3GS, which as popular as fanboys think it was, the iPhone was not truly the standard bearer for all smartphones until they released the triumphant iPhone 4. Android was on 2.1 which was a buggy, battery fiending mess and Windows Mobile sucked (the Palm Pre was nice, but oft-forgotten).

It was the last time you could say with a straight face and some caveats that BlackBerry made the very best phone on the market without being laughed out of a room. It was almost certainly the best business phone on the market. Note it wasn't because the 9700 was brilliant (though I contend it was - the Bold's performance in a very pocketable form factor), but the competition was just at the cusp of breaking out but still had many kinks to work out.

The most popular phone in terms of sales volume was likely the 8100 Pearl in 2006/07 or the 8520 Curve in 2009. They were ubiquitous for those years. The Bold 9000 was also quite a success but not in quite the same way as the 9700.

BB's best three quarters were Q3 2010, Q4 2010 and Q4 2011. People often erroneously think BB was sliding ever since the iPhone which criminally undersells the clout they had in the smartphone business in the second half of the 2000s - it was their dominant prime period and it somewhat leaked into the early part of this decade into Q1 2012 and sales were somewhat stable right up until BB10 was released when it all went straight to hell.

That's because, while BB still had inertia providing some sales in mature markets, they were in fact starting to fall in the US and elsewhere in 2009, and noticeably so in 2010. The reason they hadn't peaked yet is because their emerging market sales were really just starting to kick in about that time - which kind of obscured the fact that North America and Europe were already moving to other platforms.

You are definitely right, though, that iOS and Android really didn't get massive traction until the iPhone 4 and FroYo/Gingerbread, because there were still key features missing prior to that. Once those hit, developers were all in, and every other platform was effectively out of time.

Probably their best selling device of all time
But it came out well before the Bold 9900 which is probably the last device that never bombed
