it sounds like the phone is locked to a carrier. you would have to have the phone unlocked.

you can't just switch a sim card and expect it to work instantly. But, has redsoxrocker has already pointed out, you'll need to unlock the device first. You can read up on how to do that.

The 8830 is a World Phone. I believe that the GSM capabilities on it only work internationally and not in the US. US Cellular is a CDMA carrier.

You could sell it and use the money to buy a device that works on your carrier.

However, a BB without a data plan just for texting is sort of sacrilege anyway

Just get the phone unlocked. There's a ton of threads
here that tell you exactly what you need to know.

You cannot unlock a cdma phone. With US Cellular there is no sim card slot on any phone from them. You put your sim card in the mini sd slot? That phone will only work on the US Cell network.

medic there is a sim card slot, and the phone recognized the sim card and downloaded all of my contacts onto it even.

but apparently you cannot use a US GSM network on it, so i truly am s.o.l.

Well, the World Phone does have a SIM card slot. But I do not believe that it can be used with GSM in the US.

Weird. I have been with them for 8 plus years, and I have never seen a sim card slot on a phone for them. My bad.

Cdma phones search for specific towers that are pre programmed in the phone. It is a stupid feature(if you can call it a feature). I have tried in the past to get another carrier's phone activated on US Cell's network. You can get it going, but it will never find the towers you want.
