I think it would make sense for BlackBerry, in the relatively near future, to release a desktop client for BBM if they really want to challenge Skype and other similar platforms. Not only would it be an awesome cross platform service, the desktop space will also for more chances for monetization, specifically the ability to have more advertising space. I know Thor has been pretty focused on the mobile aspect but I think they would be missing a key factor if they left out the desktop aspect of his mobile computing vision.

Sorry to burst your bubble, BlackBerry aren't working on a desktop client. It would be nice though.

How do you know that, exactly? I thought I'd heard the opposite, but I can't remember the source.

Well... if they develop one for WP8, then it wouldn't be hard to get it on winRT and Windows 8.

Yes. Even if it's just an enterprise app to start. But shouldn't exclude anybody. Bbm for everybody. Gotta remember this market is crowded. Bbm is great but dominance isn't guaranteed

If they truly want to be cross platform and be the ultimate communication app/quasi social network, then yes, there should be a desktop (along with tablet) client.

Having it is an enterprise app at a minimum is a great idea. I used an instant messenger, I think by IBM, at a place I once worked at. It was great, it did simple messaging also video chat.
