Should RIM make a GNote sized device?
- As much as I can't wait to get my hands on a BB10 device, I'm left wondering if RIM needs to shock the market with something new running BB10 OS. I'm thinking something the size of a galaxy note but different. Maybe about the same size yet it opens up to have two screens. The hinge could incorperate a stylus pen. The Gnote has me thinking of the merits of new modles of mobile devices. RIM needs something newer than just a new phone I believe.dadymon likes this.09-04-12 11:30 PMLike 1
- I feel the Galaxy Note is a weird size, too big to easily fit in a pocket, so you have to carry it in a pack, bag or briefcase, may as well have a 7" or 10" tablet, So, no.09-04-12 11:37 PMLike 0
- Trust me. The g note is not easy to handle. It's fun. But it's not quick to do anything with that size. I am using it for the past 6 months, and to me, it's the worst of both worlds. It's neither a phone nor a tablet which I can use instead of my laptop.
I am waiting for the 10 inch play book

Having said that, BB seems to do very well with the younger crowds who like BBM. I feel like this same demographic would also be all over something that allows them to play games, watch movies, etc. Thus, something like the Note could be a welcome hit for people who want BBM, but are not the old die hards who swear by the keyboard.09-05-12 12:07 AMLike 0 - I think if the PlayBook gets a non-gimped upgrade to BB10 and the hardware holds up, we're all going to look back and see the PlayBook as one of the most value packed purchases in recent tech history. I think this would fill the GNote niche for BB.Steve Rizla likes this.09-05-12 12:20 AMLike 1

Mine fits in my pocket just fine. But, no. At this point RIM doesn't need to make one.
another question i'd also ask is if it does fit in your pocket will it be comfortable for the user to keep it there or will it feel awkward when sitting or walking09-05-12 12:53 AMLike 0 - So it sounds like a no, for now.
I'm very surprised at how many Gnotes I see in Asia. Malaysia is crazy for Samsung and you see more notes there than anything.
So do people believe that RIM will regain market share by simply going with a qwerty and full touch phones or will the need something else to shake the media perception they currently have?09-05-12 01:22 AMLike 0 - As much as I can't wait to get my hands on a BB10 device, I'm left wondering if RIM needs to shock the market with something new running BB10 OS. If they don't release BB10 that beats the Galaxy 3 & rivals the iPhone 5 then it won't matter RIM will be sold. I just want them to make a BB10 device that excels on the quality of the 9900 & a touch that competes with other touch screen devices.09-05-12 05:14 AMLike 0
- The note is a damn good device for all purposes really. It does fit in most pockets unless your wearing kapris or skinny jeans. Every regular sized pair of pants/shorts I have it fits comfortably for walking and sitting.
I would absolutely love for rim to fill this niche for me (and others) who really can't go back to using something smaller anymore. Even my gs3 is absolutely miniscule by comparison and I find myself excited to use my note every time. & Although I will probably have both bb10 devices I can't say that neither the operating system or form factor --no matter how good either may be-- will keep me from my note. At this point size absolutely matters most for me. So the more options the better.
Seriously look how awesome the note 2 looks:
That's how I want my bb10 device to be. Bb10 + a note type device=Awesome.

I have used a Galaxy Note and i didn't really like it. The size is too big to handle with one hand, it almost feels like the device is going to drop anytime. Especially when typing with on hand, even if you adjust the keyboard, its still hard to type. 2 handed typing is another story though, with the large width, its extremely easy to type on. Media capabilities is of course brilliant as well. In comparison the S3 is a much easier device to handle.
Also the plus point that it brings is the s-pen, which is using wacom tech. Which makes more sense in a larger device.
The Note is extremely thin, so its quite pocketable as well. But you definitely feel it in your pants pocket, especially when driving, or climbing stairs.
Anyway, personally i still feel that its not my kind of thing. One handed ease of use is important for me. With the London we have 4.2", with PlayBook we have 7". In the future there might be a 5.5" version to fill in the gap, who knows. But i hope that by then, mobile tech would have improved to the point where there isn't that much need for large bezels. If the phone is mainly screen, it might keep the physical device size down while still allowing a large screen.BoldtotheMax likes this.09-05-12 07:40 AMLike 1 - Like Bla1ze also own a GNote in addition to a BB and absolutely love it - so in theory I would not mind seeing a BB style GNote. The one possible problem would be the bezel necessary for gestures in BB10 would add to the already large size and if you think the current GNote is large with the extra bezel would be even bigger.09-05-12 08:10 AMLike 0
- @Alex_Hong - Galaxy Note is intended for both hand usage.. Since I would never use it a primary.. It's great to go in a small portfolio case with your other stuff..
@randall2580 - I'm sure they are working on a thinner frame.. BB10 is pretty compact with the large screen and body..09-05-12 09:58 AMLike 0 - I don't know what you mean by "shocking the market" when it comes to releasing a form factor already done by Samsung as well as Dell. Besides, one of the main design factors of BB10 is the easy of one-handed use, and creating a phone that will require a hand just to hold goes against that.09-05-12 10:06 AMLike 0
- Tre LawrenceBetween RealitiesI don't think the Note is too big. I always looked at it as a niche product, but a tad large my taste. Then again, I once thought 4+" was too big not that long ago, so...
Don't think RIM really needs one out of the gate, but down the line, why not?Last edited by trelawrence; 09-06-12 at 06:59 AM.

The one hand operations is subjected to handheld device usage.. PlayBook will run OS10 in the future but you cannot use it one handed..
The Galaxy Note is a 'Phablet' so it can be a good mix of one hand and both hands usage..
And actually - the one hand usage is more of referring to the monotonous tasks of checking alerts, going through emails and using a phone while you are doing something else, eg. grocery shopping? I does not mean you have to always use the phone one handed..dadymon likes this.09-06-12 03:25 AMLike 1
