I must have changed settings inadvertently because by pressing ALT I cannot now type numbers or the alternate on the key (e.g. . Help please!

There's no setting that disables the ALT key. Try removing the battery with the phone ON. Leave it out for a few seconds, then put it back. That reboots your device and should clear the problem.
