I've got a BB 8310 issued to me by my company - service via AT&T. I'd rather carry a something like a Torch. My question is... if I buy a different BB, can I just swap the SIM card? Does the phone need to be unlocked first?

As long as the two phones in question are branded to the same carrier you don't
    need to worry about unlocking.

If, for instance, one phone is branded to AT&T and the other is branded to T-Mobile
then yes the T-Mo phone would need to be unlocked (given your current SIM is
    registered to AT&T.)

DO NOT mix a personal phone and business phone. You buy it and it will not be yours so to speak. Once their IT policy is on it you loose control of your phone.

    I'd ask your IT department.
