What is the purpose of selecting this option?

Before today all the options (GPS) were enabled I just had never selected the Refresh option. I did it just a few minutes ago and it returned coordinates and found 5 satellites.

Cool but is this just returning my current position? What effect does this have? When is it useful to select the Refresh option?

it refreshes your location......its a hard reset on GPS

Yep, exactly. And you can get the actual lat/long location if you need it which the regular maps do not provide.

1) Go an area where you have an unencumbered view of the sky

2) Options > advanced options > GPS > press the menu key (left of trackball) >
select Refresh GPS
