There are 3rd party software that allows you to edit a document. Do a search and you will find it.
i think you can veiw a word doc but not change it

I read that the new os update coming early april will let you edit word docs.

eOffice is a third part application that will allow editing. It's kind of pricey (US $99.00). Once the new OS (4.5) is out, DocsToGo has stated they will release a BB version of their product, which edits as well. They haven't given a price but I had the application on my Treo 650 and it cost US $29.00. Worked just as expected.
