A lightweight, XML-based format for feeds of information. Generally used for information that is updated on a regular basis, such as news headlines, although it is very flexible and can be used for many types of information.
Because it is lightweight and generally more efficient than a full web page (or even a mobile page), it is ideal for mobile devices where bandwidth and screen size are limited.
RSS-reader software is available for most smartphones.
I don't have the link handy, but you should Google "Viigo" - it's a free RSS reader that's available for a variety of platforms, including RIM's BlackBerry devices... I've had it (installed) on Microsoft Windows Mobile devices before, but never actually used it until I got my BlackBerry and I'm pretty impressed, to say the least.
Anyway, as was pointed out above, RSS feeds are basically just a summary of a topic and after reading the said summary, you can either elect to read more or move onto the next article; some of the more original uses for RSS include announcements of when a Web page has changed/updated and for alerts on social networking sites (such as Facebook).
Almost all major Web sites offer RSS feeds for one reason or another these days, though sometimes you have to search the site in question for "RSS"...
