Probably a silly question, but I wanted to make sure PINs are free. Doesn't Blackberry Messenger use SMS?

Each Blackberry device is assigned a pin# automatically. BBM does not use sms.

Yeah I know every device has a PIN, I am talking about through the service provider, do PINs cost anything to send or does it just use data?

PIN messages use Blackberry data, as most people have unlimited BB data on thier calling plan PIN messaging is effectively free.

PIN numbers are given to each Blackberry @ RIM during the birthing process.

but you cannot call RIM and say i want a new PIN for my Bold.... you have to buy a new Bold.. so in the truth of the matter PINs are free when you buy a phone. Or PINs cost 450.00+ (USD) but the phone is free.

And BBM is free if you have a unlimited BIS/BES plan but some plans are not unlimited, so the BBM is not truely 100% free.

I think he was referring to a pin message and not the device pin.
