Pearl Volume controls

I just bought my first BB (Pearl 8130 / Verizon). I've been able to adjust the volume using the 'profile' tips that other posts have recommended. However, I'm having trouble adjusting the volume with the volume up/down controls located on the right side of the phone. I know there is probably an extremely simple solution that I'm overlooking - but any help that could be offered would be much appreciated.

If you're trying to adjust the volume of a profile notification, you are not able to do that using the controls on the side. You can only control phone call and media volume.
