They are usually in alphabetical order. But sometimes they get messed up. A battery pull should fix this.

You can also create groups, and actually rename your contacts yourself.

Are you looking at your "current conversations" list or "contacts" list? Contacts list is alphabetical. "Current conversations" are in order of most recent message.

looking at my contacts list, i know they should be in alphabetical order, but they are not. strange.
