I am wondering if there's an option to make the screen light up or anything besides the flashing red light to indicate when you have a new message or something like that? My old phone would flash and light up on the screen when I had a new message or call and I noticed I can not find that option with my Blackberry Curve....am I missing something??

You're not missing anything. It's not there. The only way to do it is with a 3rd party app like graceless has amazingly provided a link to.
