Your phone will not require you use any data to upgrade your OS so no, you will not be charged anything.

That depends on how you perform the installation. If you do it
OTA (Over The Air - using phone browser), that will use data.

If you download the necessary files to your computer then no
data usage will be required.

I was under the impression that no carrier was offering OTA OS upgrades yet

You're right. I was answering the question on whether installing apps used data
or not in post #3.

okay, so here is another newbie Q.

you can have an email plan without data?

i know you could have messaging w/o data, but i thought email was considered data?

vzw has them for the official release os of the storm, don't know the policy for telus, but with vzw, you have unlimited, (up to 5g of data), so it doesn't matter.
I would call telus and ask.

You have to have a BB email and data plan to activate a BB on vzw. No loopholes, no way around it...

I don't understand why it's called unlimited when there's a 5GB cap...

NoOne has ever come close on a phone that wasn't tethered to a laptop, time and battery life wouldn't allow it, so nobody really knows what will happen when the 5g gets hit.
I believe, with apps like slingbox being released, somebody will hit it this year, then we can see what the rule really means.

Have you set up your email accounts on your BB yet?
If you can make a call your activated.

And you can't receive email ?

Is this the reason why you're on your 3rd BB in a month ?

no i have email - i dont have a blackberry email.

lol no the reason i am on my 3rd device is because my txt keep deleting themselves even on "keep - forever" and my call log is not keeping anything either. they are telling me that it is memory leaks. and that it is not a known problem with the 8830 WE. and they are GUARANTEEING me that the new device (which is a brand new one - not a refurbished - which the one i have now is) i said ha! and that i would call them when it did.

I don't think it is a big problem on WE's, for sure not like a pearl.
You should still be getting emails, you might want to call #611 and make sure your account is provisioned right.
