As the title states, need to replace my moms aging Z10 with something relatively cheap that will not require too much relearning, but will also last her a good year or two.

She lives in another country (I only see her once or twice a year, unfortunately) and so whenever I send her off with something I have to make sure it will withstand the duration of the 'deployment'.

Having used a Z10 for about two years, she's familiar with BB10, and seems to do fine with the virtual keyboard.

She actually insists her Z10 is 'fine', but the speaker phone is starting to intermittently cut out,.. and it looks pretty beat up (Hooray, she used it!)

Anyway, she doesn't want anything fancy, and so I'm trying to balance price, familiarity, longevity.

I haven't even used the Priv, so I would not be able to help her out with it,.. plus it's way too expensive for a non-gadget fanatic.

I suggested the Passport, but she didn't like the $400+ price tag either, and thought it was a bit too large.

So that leaves me with either a Z30, Z10 or Leap. I would go with the Z30 over the leap.

Do you guys think a new Z30 ($212 on Amazon) would remain relevantly functional for at least a year? She's not exactly a heavy app user (basically just email, calls, WA, BBM, take pictures).

I guess I kinda feel bad giving her something that is likely about to become obsolete. At the same time, it saves her from having to entirely re-learn (shifting to Android, or iOS) for now.

    Thoughts? Ideas?

    Thanks !

Z30. Simply because the Leap speaker is probably lower quality than the Z10

Definitely. I'll probably still be using it for a year myself and it's by far the best BlackBerry 10 device 2nd to the Passport.

You could check your local Craigslist for another Z10.

They can be had for under $100 now.

If your mom is not running a business or using the functions, she does not need a $200 phone.

Yeah, but... I'm sure she'll appreciate the bigger screen. Whenever I see her phone I'm sure the font size has been increased by a few points... lol

I think the Z30 sounds like a reasonable route. Good price, familiarity, and some (albeit slight compared to newer alternatives) 'upgrade' feel.

Hands down a z30. Bigger/better battery, bigger screen but not that much bigger than a z10, miracast, usb OTG, faster, cheap, great speakers, well built, and no real learning curve from z10

If you can still find a z30 for $212, get it.

Leap is not a bad option, but doesn't have all the features of a z30, although the screen maybe slightly better.

If she doesn't use HDMI-out, USB-OTG, or NFC, she might be happier with the brighter LCD screen on the Leap, and the much better LTE compatibility. Just a thought.

I have found that the Z30 was a great upgrade from the z10. I had my z10 for almost 2 years when I upgraded to the z30. Even though it's been out for a couple years, is just a better device than the z10 in every respect. Z30 is the right choice

Blackberry Z10 was the beginning. The Z30 is my upgrade

Z30 all the way! I would have suggested Passport, but you said that the price and size was a problem, though 32GB of storage is pretty sweet if you ask me.

That's a good point, at least reminded me to double check band compatibility with her current carrier.

Z30 sounds good. At that price it's a steal seeing as it will run with today's big boys. The only thing for your mom might be the dim screen.

You should be able to find a Z30 even cheaper. I picked one up for my father this summer for 185 Cdn. From shop BlackBerry will a discount code.
    Awesome phone by the way.

Z30 is the best choice. Good value for the price, great speakers, you get used to the slightly dimmer screen (I only notice it when I put it beside my Z10), great battery life.
No learning curve from the Z10.

I have 2 factory unlocked Z30s. I don't really miss LTE on AT&T. They are about a year old, and I plan to use them at least another year. If I get a Priv, I will probably keep a Z30 as a spare. It is the best phone I have used.

A new Z30. She'd know how to use it.
Upgrades from the Z10 are the speakers, the battery life, fm radio, paratek antenna, easier to type on for older eyes. Easier to view things on a big screen but it's not unreasonably big at the same time.

if she isn't picky about apps and you can set up browser shortcuts to run Facebook and stuff on the mobile Web browser she'll be fine. The phone will last 2 years. If you only need one year.

I'm saying this with the assumption she knows how to use her Z10. Otherwise alot of times the phone of choice for elderly people and non tech people are an iPhone. Anyone I see over 80 has an iPhone it seems. I know kids love them I guess but to me I've come to think of them as old folks phones.

Gonna go against the grain here...buttt....
My beloved Z10 just died...it was an STL100-1 that I got from Tigerdirect a few years ago..
Damned thing just worked like a charm...not the top of the heap Z10 but I loved it...sooo
when it died I seriously cosidered the Z30 but kept lookin at the Leap...Which is basically
a Z10 with bigger screen....I have found none, nada, nope not even one of the various
problems that I see reported in the crackbarry forums...I am very very pleased with the
Leap...and my grandkids like it cause it has a bigger screen that makes game playing
on it sooo much better..... I have all the apps or at least access to all the apps that I would
ever want or need....soo I would recommend Mom get a look at the Leap...although the Z30
is good too..just getting old...like most of us!!!

My son replaced his Z10 with Leap. He did not want the Priv cause he prefers OS10. The Leap has excellent speaker, is gorgeous, nice display and runs smoothly. He didn't like the looks of the Z30 or the amoled display. The Leap was $199 on ShopBlackberry. Good buy.

Z30 is not old or slow. Bought mine a year ago Thanksgiving and it has only improved throughout the last year. Too many people are conditioned to think they need a new device far more frequent than necessary. (At least with BlackBerry 10 and Apple products) This device does any and everything I need and excellent in managing our family and business. (And I get two day battery life) Your mom would love a Z30. My wife will not use anything else (for now). I showed her a Priv but the HUB is not as integrated nor does it have the most excellent swiping motions and true multitasking ability. *We both have Samsung Tab Pro tablets for the past year so we are familiar with the Android OS)

Had Z10 for two years. Then got Z30, battery power alone is enough reason to purchase Z30. Only regret - should've bought it sooner. Still loving my Z30 and it's still going strong.

Waiting for the next high end full touch BB10!
