Of all the things on this site that get on my nerves, this issue is WAAAAY down the list. Probably at the bottom.

It's probably way down the list because you had to scroll past all the "first" comments.

It is really starting to derail all the comments on any of the blogs when the first comment and 10 subsequent responses are "First" and responses to this idiocy. These comments need to be deleted and repeat offenders banned as it is derailing actual enjoyable discussion from taking place in the comments. Sound off below and hopefully this thread can pick up enough stream that the editors/mods take it seriously.

I can say this. Almost a month ago I successfully pulled off the 'first' comment, on the Main Page. Kevin M responded, with a "you did it, good job". I'm not going to sit here and act like it wasn't the highlight to my morning! Sarcastic or not, I was proud.

Because it's really annoying that you have to scroll down half the page to actual get to a real comment that actually involves the article. If being the first comment on a blog is your accomplishment of the day you need to set your sights a little higher in life.

I really couldn't care much less about a few people doing the "First!" thing. Oh wait, that's wrong. I could care less and not post a response here.

Actually, what bothers me more are the multiple replies that follow about how he/she has nothing to contribute etc etc. THAT is what makes scrolling more annoying than a one-liner that's easy to ignore.

I'm pretty sure they already know they aren't contributing anyting, but it makes them feel good anyways. And they don't care, and we can't make them. So I just ignore them.

I don't really see what the big deal is. Some people think it's fun to say first, let them. (ugh. I'll never get used to typing on touch screen. it took me 5 minutes to type this on my Z10 and I'll need another 5 minutes to finish ugh)
