GREAT NEWS, FOLKS! I don't know how/if I can/should? change the name of this thread but my light is now WORKING!

Perhaps it will be helpful as is, though.

A BBM update today fixed the problem -- WooHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

    HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY ME

    Hi,

I first noticed with QuickLaunch because that's what I use for a flashlight but sadly the light will not work with camera or video either.

No problem with backlight or LED.
No flash light whether camera is set to auto or on.
    Using 5.0.0.979.
    Battery pull didn't help.
I've only had the phone about 15 months and have not used the light much.

Is this necessarily a hardware problem, and in any case, is there any way I can try to fix it?

    Help, please, thanks.

It appears to "start over" (the thingy circles around again) but no change. Just to be sure I did another battery pull but no. I appreciate the suggestion though, and welcome any more.

I do need the feature and I'd sure hate to replace the phone for such a small thing that I'd think should last longer. And I wanted to wait for a new model and especially a new contract! Help please thank you.

When was the last time it worked? And what apps were installed after? Sounds like a conflicting app or even a conflicting theme is possible. Unfortunately the only way to trouble shoot is to delete them one by one followed by a batt pull and re test. Sorry for your probs!

Before doing this you can run a hardware diagnostic test to make sure the flash is not dead. Got to Menu/Status and type the word t-e-s-t. Then folllow the instructional popup. Good luck.

    Thank you for your sympathy.

It worked as recently as the night before, and I discovered it wasn't working last night, leaving only one day of activity. I didn't change anything during that day -- no apps or themes. Darn.

But I'm glad that neither idea so far involves hardware. I really hope it isn't that. Or do people have luck with fix-it folks who install new motherboards or whatever the light is on? I don't live in a big city..

I edited my post to include instructions for a self diagnostic hardware test! Try it and see.

    (thanked your earlier post )

Well, from a neutral point of view, that is about the coolest little thing I've seen, and I'm making a memo of it. And I don't know if it's okay to post the link I found that describes the whole thing but searching "blackberry device self test application" found it easily.

BUT for me, well, it SUCKS because my flash light does not work I didn't test everything on the check list (i.e. I know my keyboard works), only the things that seemed possibly related. The camera works, the other lights work, I selected "other" or whatever it was that might cover anything I missed, but it was as I feared, the flash doesn't work.

So I guess I'm back to the question: Buy a new phone until my contract is up in December, try to get this one fixed, or live without indoor camera/video/flashlight. Assuming I don't want to choose the last, any input, anyone?

    Thanks

How old is the bb? If it's years old I would wait and upgrade. They may let you upgrade early if you ask nice!

And it's always okay to post helpful links as long as you aren't selling knockoff Rolexes, BB's or Nike's or Porn. Hahaha.

LOL! Thank you, I needed that.

I bought the phone and renewed my contract for two years in December 2009, so they are both 15+ months old. Over the phone, if I understood correctly, the store told me I could get a new Torch to finish off my contract for $249. Seems like a lot to have a camera flash for 8-9 months. It would be a new phone and model, but my plan was to wait and check out the next models...

(Though they do have it in white which looks pretty darn cool.)

So I gather that getting mine fixed is not a great option?

Good for you. Weird resolve. Sometimes. BB's can be like PC's. Stuffed with a city full of components and programs and all made by different people who never once spoke to each other. And somehow they still work! Well, most of the time. Glad your back on track.

I don't think I will be able to wait myself. Going for the 9650 or the 9780. But I am not very happy with my choice of carriers for the latter. See you in the forums.
