Yes, it's free, but if you try it you will see why people prefer JiveTalk. The JiveTalk UI (user interface) is just better.
The free GoogleTalk is also excellent, but only allows you to talk on GoogleTalk. If you want to IM on multiple networks, JiveTalk is the way to go.
