Default If switching carriers - (BB Protect Data backup)

If someone was switching from a Curve to a Torch, Rogers to Bell, can the backups BB Protect makes simply be downloaded to the new phone if using the same BlackBerry ID?

Also, does the BB PIN number stay with the user or the phone?

    Thanks!

The PIN will stay with the phone, as PINs are hardware specific... As for the Protect backups, you would be able to pull down a Protect backup file regardless of the device or carrier you're changing to. When you switch to the new carrier and device, make sure you sign in with your BlackBerry ID, start Protect, and simply select "Restore from Backup" instead of "Start Protect".

    Good to know, thanks guys.

Too bad the PIN can't move with the user instead of the phone. That would be a pain if you had a few dozen BBM contacts.

    They thought about that too

You can back up your BBM contacts a few ways.

In BlackBerry Messenger, you can go into BlackBerry Menu > Options, then scroll down to Backup Management and click "Backup".

From there, you can select two options to back up your contacts.

    1) Select "Back up files remotely" to create a copy of your contacts on RIMs servers. This will auto-update your contact list from time to time. When you move to a new BlackBerry, simply make sure the same email account you selected to back up your contacts using is enabled on the new device, from there open BBM and select "Restore contact list" and select the remote option again.

    2) Select "Back up files locally" to create a "BBM.con" file that you can then copy to your SD card. Then, on the new BlackBerry, select "Restore contact list" and select the local option again, it will ask you to locate the *.con file on your SD card.

Of course, there is always the simple method of using Desktop Manager. This method will back up ALL data, including BBM contacts, onto your computer. Then, you can simply restore the data on to your new device.

When you restore a contact list, it will replace your old PIN with your new PIN on all your friend's contact list. It will be 100% seamless to them.

Yes, you can easily restore your bbm contacts to a new phone, your friends will never know you changed. Just make sure if you choose the email backup route, restore your email on your new phone first as the bbk restore needs it.

The PIN is unique but just use the information from here to backup your contacts and switch your Blackberry, you can also update the information on your PC (DM).

Just make sure you do the backups first, then move on, switch the carrier and everything.
    Good luck.
