I had a 9700 and that thing was amazing with battery life. But T-Mobile is offering the 8520 FREE with a new contract on T-Mobile. The 9700 is $130.

I'm trying to get a BB for my parent and was wondering if the 8520's battery life was as good as the 9700's.

I'm leaning more towards the 9700 but that 8520 is free. What do you all think?

Dude, I would would go with the old saying "you get what your pay for". Now the 8520 is still a blackberry and you can do much of the same with the 9700 but it's not a 9700. The 9700 hundrend not only looks and feels better but comes with better features.

Like the camera for instance, 8520 2MP camera and wifi, 9700 3.2mp camera and wifi.

Also not to mention the 9700 is the updated model of the 9000.

Hope this helps out a bit, I know I didn't give you a spec comparison but it's just my opinion.

The 8520 has been said to feel really cheap in the hand. I dunno. I'd go for the 9700 if it was my decision but they aren't going to use the phone for anything more than calling and texting.

9700 is the clear winner though but the 8520 doesn't seem bad.

Well, could as well do the full thing:

    Camera - 8520: no flash 2mpx; 9700: LED flash 3.2mpx + autofocus
    Processor - 8520: 512mhz; 9700:624mhz
    Internet Speed - 8520: EDGE; 9700: 3G
    Screen Res - 8520: 320x240; 9700:480x360
    Battery - 8520: C-S2 1000mAh; 9700: M-S1 1550mAh

Crackberry staff have been all over with how much better the 9700's battery life is compared to other devices. Check the stress tests on crackberry and other Blackberry blogs and try yourself on a 8520.

By experience, I know it won't get that long, but still a great lil device!

I have never had a smartphone that had as good of battery life as the 9700. I used to get two and a half days easy with one charge and with heavy use. That is insane for a smartphone. I will echo that of those above me, the 9700 is a sweet device. If you have a chance to get one, I would highly suggest it.

Waste of a 9700 if it's just calling and SMS... but if you don't mind the $130, could as well treat your parents!

I'd rather have a nicer phone even if it's just to text/call.

my wifes got an 8520 and plays solitaire on it alot, she has to recharge it almost daily. I have the 9700 and text, surf the net(crackberry/facebook mostly),email blah blah blah more then she plays the game, I only have to charge my 9700 every other day. her phone is lighter but for a 1st BB its overall decent had I not got the 9700 I wouldnt have minded the 8520 but glad I got which one i did.
