Carefully check what it is actually asking you. After 5 tries it's usually asking you to type "Blackberry". This is to ensure that your baby or dog is not chewing on the phone and using up all your tries.
Of course once you get past this you still need your real password.

I believe it's 10 attempts for device password on locked phone and it's 5 attempts for Link entry and BBID.
Either situation provides a visual countdown of attempts and a warning of lockout.
