To my knowledge smilies won't work in SMS. Only in email and BBM & possibly MMS. But, I'm pretty sure not with "Simple Message Service" SMS, AKA "text" messaging - thus the name "text" message.

I don't know for sure. But I tried to gue emoticons for text and had no luck.
