If I'm not mistaken, BlackBerry launched the first smartphone device today. Or maybe it was yesterday. Either way, a monumental change in history that has led the way to what we see today. Too many times there is bashing of BlackBerry, but they pioneered the way for communications and should be remembered as such. Yes, they never kept up with the market and allowed Apple and Android to surpass it, but hey, never forget the originators.

Thank you BlackBerry.

It would be happy Anniversary to BlackBerry.... if this date means anything to them.

But BlackBerry were not the ones that created "THE" smartphone, weren't even the ones to be first to have a mass produced smartphone. Yes they have their place in the history books, and for a short while were the providers of the best smartphone solution with their BIS solutions.

I think you are mistaken. The device released on January 19,1999 was the RIM 850, which was a two-way pager.

The Blackberry 5810, which I think was the first device from RIM with phone capabilities, was March 4, 2002.

Actually, it was the IBM Simon Personal Communicator back in 1992. That was a cell phone with email and fax capabilities and (resistive monochrome) touchscreen input.



That was followed by the Nokia 9000 Communicator in 1996.



The following year brought the Ericsson JB988, which was used in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies as a remote control for his BMW.



All of these were, of course, proprietary and limited, as were the first "real" BB phones, such as the 6200 I carried at one time that had the "licensed from Sony" jog wheel.



These evolved into the first generation of "real" smartphones that had apps and at least rudimentary web browsers: BB's, Palm Treos, Pocket PC/WinMoble, and Symbian phones, mostly.

The iPhone was the real start of the second generation of smartphones, along with WebOS, Android, WinPhone, BB10, and others.

Oh the nostalgia of old technology... kids have no idea this day and age! I remember when my dad had a 'beeper' and we thought it was cool.
