What external GPS are you using? The Freedom Keychain 2000 has a battery-saver protocol that shuts it down if it loses a heartbeat signal from the 8830. Google Maps does not provide that signal, so the puck will shut down. Google also doesn't tell you that the puck has shut down. It continues to show its small dot, and just quits updating position. So you can be many miles down the road, and Google will show your position to 3-m accuracy, miles wrong. Running BBMaps in the background will keep the puck locked, and GMM will stay correct.
Like when I open google maps it will give me my location and it is always pretty far off. It seems that I can only use google maps as a map service, not a gps service.
Are you running BBMaps first, starting the GPS using the BBMaps 'Start GPS Navigation' command, switching BBMaps to the background, then starting Google Maps? If not, then you're either 1) using GMM in triangulation mode; 2) experiencing the error I talked about in post #2; or 3) you're experiencing the problem some have reported of Google incorrectly detecting your device and OTA downloading the wrong version of GMM.
One of these three scenarios should explain your problem.
I uninstalled bb maps cause I was using google maps. Ill put bb maps back on, how long should I run it for before trying to use google maps.
I dont see a start gps navigation command. A little more help please.
If you just reinstalled BBMaps, be sure to select the external GPS: Options/GPS Source. That may be why you're not seeing the 'Start GPS Navigation' menu item. It's fourth from the top on the main menu.
I usually run BBMaps until it tells me I've got a satellite lock. Then I switch it to the background and launch GMM.
JUST got the curve. Dont see the options in bb maps. I went to options>advanced>GPS and the first option is GPS source but the only choice is device gps.
Btw I think we might of gotten a little confused in this, I want to be able to use google maps without having my external GPS, like for when I am driving someone elses car or the such.
Your OP said "Google Maps on Verizon 8830." But it really doesn't matter, 8830 or Curve. Verizon disables the internal GPS for any application other than VZ Navigator. So if you don't want to use VZN, you'll have to use your external GPS. If you're trying to use the internal GPS with BBMaps or GMM, that's why nothing is working. I just assumed you already knew about the internal GPS since you said you had an external one.
Nothing you can do or say about the internal GPS that hasn't already been said...
yeah what he said. VZW is sneaky as ****. I'm not paying $10 a month for additional service. Buying an external GPS is a more likely choice and then using Nav4All or something else free
The Freedom Keychain 2000 is sold in the Crackberry store. I have it. It's an excellent choice, but you can find cheaper units.
I mean google maps works, but its not very accurate at all. How come it works "kind of"?
Google maps suits my needs.
It's triangulating your location based on the signal strengths from nearby towers. So it'll give your position within a radius of 1700 meters or larger, depending on the tower locations. It's a useful feature.
So, bottomline: get a GPS external puck (like the keychain 2000), pair it up with your 8830 via bluetooth, and your GoogleMaps will show your position within 3m. If you want it to keep refreshing and updating your position while travelling, you'll have to run some other GPS program in the background, like BBMaps, GPSed, nav4All, etc and that will keep GoogleMaps on track with you. Somehow, GoogleMaps does not keep refreshing the GPS position by itself (except initially at turn-on). But the other program running in the background WILL keep refreshing the GPS position which GoogleMaps will then use! :)
Figured it was triangulating signal.
