Google Maps GPS saves the day
Last Thursday I went to an area of Southern CA that I am not familiar with. I drove to Hemet to do some business. I did not want to drive back the way I had come to return to San Diego as I wanted some variety.
I asked for directions from a local. As often happens I did not correctly retain the instructions and about 15 minutes later I found myself in the back country on a two lane road. I was traveling in the general direction I wanted to go, but "where does this road go?"
Out came my Curve on which I have Google Maps. ( I pulled over to look) The GPS in the Curve found me immediately, named the road I was on and when I zoomed out I could see that the road intersected a state highway about 20 miles along. Now I could enjoy the drive through some pretty country on a sunny Southern California afternoon. As I drove I could see the pip moving on the map as my trip progressed.
Oh, and I had no cell signal in that area for several miles. GPS doesn't depend on cell signal so life was good. :D

I should have mentioned that I am on the AT&T network. The maps did load during the trip and the blue dot progressed on the road I was traveling. During much of that time my bluetooth headset was beeping which indicates that I did not have cell service.
As a test I shut off the network and then tried the Google Maps App. It loads and the blue dot shows me at my home. It even moves about the house if I do. So, the app works independant from the cell service.:)
