Gone retro.... and loving it!!!
Now on my 11th BB. Now, one would assume the natural progression would be to move up the BB models as time goes on, which, to a point, I have. However, I cannot compare (on a personal basis) any BB to my all-time favourite BB, the 9700.
Until recently I had moved about 4 models on from the 9700, but always in the back of mind were the thoughts "I still don't like this as much as my 9700"!!!.
Well, after much grieving for my old 9700 mate, and to be honest, they are getting harder and harder to obtain BNIB, I decided to sell my 9860 and 9900 and buy myself a lovely, spanking BNIB BB Bold 9700. It came yesterday and in a perverse way, I feel as happy as a pig in sh*t.
What I'm going to do when you can't get hold of them anymore is anyone's guess, I suppose the natural progression would be the 9780.
Thoughts?BB's so-far.... 8300, 8330, 8707v, 8900, 9000, 9300, 9700, 9780, 9800, 9860, 9900, 9860, 32gb Playbook, Ipad2, another BNIB 9700.
, and now back to my all-time favourite - the 9860!

Kicking it old school. LOVE It.
The 9700 definitely is a great all around device. Compact, durable, fast. Amazing battery life. The best of the "traditional" BlackBerry experience.
The 9780 was arguably not better at its release, because it came with BlackBerry 6 and no ability to disable the homescreen scrolling between panes, which sort of went against the efficiency of OS 5. Sometimes less is more.
Enjoy it! I actually have a new 9700 sitting here in a box... been contemplating putting it to use. I do love the keyboard on the 9900 though... but 9700 = all around work horse of a phone.Kevin Michaluk

Ummmm (rubs chin). Keep a hold of that boxed 9700, Kevin. No doubt it will be BB gold-dust in the not-so-distant future.
I have my beady eyes on that boxed 9700 along with a fluffy stack of your finest Canadian $'s at the ready, If you so wish to depart wth that BMW of BB's.

I just put my 9930 away....again...and took out my 9370. My satisfaction with the 9930 continues to diminish. My Curve is more trustworthy than my Bold, and that's a sad state of affairs when I trust an entry level device more than the flagship.
I am also considering moving away from VZW over to TMO. If I do, I will get either the 9360 or the 9780. Wish I could get a 9790...that would be wonderful.
Maybe when I go across the pond I'll get an unlocked 9790.
I loved the 9700. It was a great device. Loved it.

I like what you've said about the 9700, how it's a workhorse.
I liken BlackBerry 6 on a 9780 (or my 9650) to a Windows box with the minimum required specs running Vista. The same computer running XP is a lot leaner and more efficient like a 9700 or (9650) on OS5. Though a downgrade to OS5 is always an option for my 9650, it's running so well on Sprint's 706 (except for the missing PIN message flaw) that I don't want to tamper with it. Also, I love Universal Search and wouldn't want to lose it. - 06-16-2012, 11:39 AM #7
This is disheartening, but it's been my concern all along. I'm really attracted to the 9900/9930, especially because of the keyboard, but it just makes no sense for me to replace my perfectly working 9650 workhorse with a new handheld that has a really good chance of not being as reliable.
Is this because of the upcoming plan changes and/or other Verizon antics? I ask because I'm generally pleased with Sprint (coverage, service, etc.), but Simple Mobile is so much cheaper for the same thing I have now (Sprint Simply Everything). I guess what's making me balk at switching to Simple is the fear that, being month-to-month, no contract, those savings could evaporate in an instant if Simple decides to jack up the prices or if it must raise prices because of something that goes wrong with its piggyback arrangement with T-Mobile. - 06-16-2012, 11:42 AM #8
I thought the 9780 was hard to beat, with the Leebo minimalist theme. With 1500 mAh battery I could do anything on it all day without thinking about running out of juice. I do prefer the larger form of the 9900 but in other respects the 9780 was hard to beat. I regret selling it.

I have a 9780 on T-Mobile, and I love it. I am thinking about buying a BNIB too.

I did much the same thing. My girlfriend has taken custody of my 9900 so I can go back to my trusty 9780. I miss the keyboard of the 9900 but the form factor and battery life of the 9780 are just fantastic.
I have a 9700 I was given from Work. There are some occasions where I feel it's simpler and faster, but the universal search is pretty useful on OS6. - 06-16-2012, 12:33 PM

For peace-of-mind, I use the 9700 for the sole purpose as a communication tool, i.e phone, text messaging, calender, meetings, reminders and email. Keeping my self in this mindset, I am truley convinced there's nothing out there to compare.
For all other things, social networking, browsing, games et al, I have my IPad (spit) I hear some BB stalwarts say,

I completely agree with you on the 9700. That phone was one of the very
best of the BlackBerry line and for you to get a BNIB makes me a tad jealous. - 06-16-2012, 06:09 PM #15
I love my 9700. I've considerd selling it and upgrading to the 9900, but just haven't pulled the trigger. The 9700 has been good to me. It's hard to replace something that has always performed and never given me any problems. It just works.

I always regretted selling my 9780. It was an awesome phone but I sold it when I upgraded to the 9860. Am actually back in the market now looking for a cheap used 9780 white. Though the 9860 is an excellent phone, the 9780 workhorse was more business-like and was always ready for a 1000 word document. I ant imagine typing a 500 word document on my 9860...
Curve 8300 -> Curve 8320 -> Bold 9780 -> Torch 9860 -> Bold 9900 -> Z10

Having both the 9700 and 9780 and a HTC One X. I must say...nothing beats the "RETRO" 9700. With all these new devices coming in and out now a days. A 9700 is a truly magnificent piece of craftsmanship. Hands down!

I came from a 9700 to 9900. I dont miss anything apart from battety life.
When 9700 came out, it was the classiest bb ever. Even the 9780 was not as equal.
Now that title is held by 9900.
Bridge on 9900 is 10 times faster than 9700.
To me, that alone was worth the upgrade.

I always loved my 9700 and 9780.
9780 more because of the functionality and universal search benefits of OS6.
I have six 9780s in my family now.
Myself, I use the 9900 just because of it's keyboard and screen. Everyday, I end up using my spare 9780 and boy!!! I feel nostalgic at the end of it.
If only, RIM could release a phone with the dimensions and power of 9900 with the legendary strengths of 9780/9700, then there would not be another soul happier than me.
1500mah battery, the rock solid build quality, snappy, slick feel, keyboard without click click noise and top dual buttons for mute and standby/lock functions etc.. Should I also mention the loop bracket for the neck string?..
Damn!!! I am being a bit too old school here. x_x
If I had to sell/replace my 9900 right now, my next addition would be another 9780 for sure! - 06-17-2012, 06:04 AM #23
LMAO, getting a 2.5 year old phone is NOT retro, wanna go retro? Get a 8800 or a 7230 that I keep in my car as backup

Sometimes all that new-super-duper tech is worth nothing because we already forgot why we started to use it in the first place..
The Blackberry Bold 9700 is a really strong and powerful Blackberry device, and as for what it should do it does without any problem.. good keyboard, good battery life & all the great all things that we love about Blackberry.
Enjoy it!Last edited by blackberry-unlocking710; 06-17-2012 at 06:26 AM. Reason: Blackberry Bold 9700 retro
