When typing emails/texts etc..., how do I get text to appear in italics or bold?

I'm having a tough time figuring this out. My instinct is telling me this is easy and I will feel dopey when I find out the answer

SMS messages are limited to plain ASCII, no formatting. Emails you receive can have formatting of course, but I don't know how to apply bold, italic, etc to messages created on the BlackBerry.

I used to be able to format SMS texts messages on my old Samsung, but I have not been able to find a method to use for the BlackBerrys. I'm pretty sure the BlackBerrys cannot do it...
