I have a bluetooth dongle that plugs into my laptop. It pairs with my Curve ok. The instructions say that I need to enable the FTP function of my phone (the instructions are not specific to a BB or a Curve) in order to share files and folders. Can I do that? If so, how?

You can send files one at a time if you go into media hit menu and select receive using bluetooth. If you want to do browsing of files/folders and work with multiple files youll need an app like this: Bluetooth File Sharing - Personal Productivity BlackBerry Apps - Crackberry BlackBerry Software Store

I purchased it and it was well worth it.
