Ex-Sybase partners stake BlackBerry claim to the Internet of Things

Marty Beard, former CEO of LiveOps, is BlackBerry's new chief operating officer.

What would make someone leave a CEO position at a rising Redwood City tech company to become chief operating officer of BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY), the once dominant smartphone company that is fighting to regain its footing getting knocked off its pedestal by the explosion of iPhone and Android-powered devices around the world?

Marty Beard says that he was attracted by the way that his former CEO at Pleasanton-based Sybase, new BlackBerry CEO John Chen, is repositioning BlackBerry to help large companies manage secure communications in a world dominated by mobile computing, ranging from internal corporate servers handsets, wearables, smart home and healthcare devices and Internet connected cars.

"There's this huge new phase coming and BlackBerry is uniquely positioned to take advantage of it," said Beard, who previously ran Sybase 365, the mobile messaging and commerce subsidiary of Sybase Inc. that transformed the database player into a major mobile services player as well, a key factor in its sale to SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) for $5.8 billion in 2010.

"The broader play is the Internet of Things, of which a mobile device is a thing," Beard said. "That's going to take off. It will be the next wave of mobility. It's bigger than most people realize, and what's going to happen is securing all that and managing all that so it doesn't get out of control will become very important."

Chen, who previously led Sybase from the brink of failure to become a profit machine over a period of 14 years, has already brought a software industry approach to BlackBerry's business. BlackBerry for the first time recently extended its BlackBerry Messenger service through the cloud to Android and iOS phones (Windows is under testing now).

Its good to see BlackBerry having some deals in the making. John chen is not taking any chances. Hope BlackBerry will once again be a dominant force in tech.

BlackBerry is positioning themselves nicely for the next big thing out there, especially within the Business Sector.

It would be really nice if while planning for the next big thing, they kept making cool phones and other gadgets for us to use and enjoy.

Agreed but unfortunately they have limited resources to do both right now.
