(I have a blackberry curve 8830)
And when I text on it and I put brackets[] in the text, they take up 2 characters instead of just one character...Anyone know why this is?

Ummm, because they are 2 separate characters.
Well. I just tested it on my 8330 and I'm not seeing what you are. I put a single bracket and the character count goes to 159. Add another and it goes to 158. The brackets aren't a matched pair. They are two distinct characters.

No, I'll put a smiley face like :] and it will go down to 159 characters at the : and down to 157 characters at the ].
Does it add a space before or after? Is this just in regular SMS?

I tried it and I see what you're talking about. My only suggestion is that maybe it's because the bracket is the width of two characters instead of one. It doesn't do it with parenthesis.

That's the answer you were looking for right there. It's just counted as 2 characters because of its size.
if the size were the cause then it would happen on other BlackBerries and it does not on mine. I would guess more a bug in the software
It happens on mine.
Interesting, and you both are on AT&T. Wonder how many others have this issue
Not sure whether the carrier is a factor, since I'm using a bootleg OS from elsewhere.
Just tried it on mine and it only counted as 2 characters. Wierd.
