Do you take your smartphone with you wherever you go?
Yes. And I did the same with all my cell phones before my BB.
Is your smartphone the last thing you look at before you go to sleep and the first thing you look at when you wake up?
Usually.
Do you make or take business calls regularly when away from work?
I'm a grad student so I don't really have any "away from work" time.
Do your family or friends give you exasperated looks when you pull out your smartphone constantly?
No.
Many people say that they don't like cell phones or smart phones because they don't want to be chained to them, be always available, always getting email or whatever. I look at it the exact opposite. Never do I have to worry about missing an important call or e-mail. I can go wherever I want and people can still contact me and I can contact them. And of course I just ignore anything I don't want to deal with at the time.
Yes, I consider you to be CrackBerry's resident "voice of reason".
Also, I think the author doesn't thing broadly enough regarding this issue. The lines have obviously blurred between business and personal lives WRT smartphones. I use mine for both, and I could answer yes to some of those questions. OTOH, I don't let it control me. What I mean is I use it for lots of communications and information gathering, but if I'm doing something or with someone I care about, I have absolutely no problem putting it down, away, on silent, or simply ignoring it.
And I also think it's a sweeping generalization to say if one takes a work call or e-mail, he/she feels overly "important". It's just a matter of keeping on top of things, and sometimes we just have to be available. I know that a power plant depends on my being available in a pinch, but I don't feel I'm "all that". Also, I keep these communications to a reasonable length, volume, and as private as possible.
So I guess it's not necessarily an all or nothing proposition IMHO.
