They wouldn't, as it'll take them another three years to integrate it. And, since everyone will know of it WAY before hand due to the purchase, the iOS folks will be griping pretty much everyday about how it's not out fast enough to suit them. I don't think Apple would want the PR nightmare. Apple would most probably turn into the next RIM (or have a history repeat that doesn't go so well the second time) if that was to happen.
RIM is not THAT desperate. If they have USD1.00 left in the bank, with no sales at all, then yes, this might happen. They are bleeding, but they don't require a heart transplant.
