My home is in US but have been in Singapore for 6 mts. When in the US I had the unlimited data plan so didn't really need WiFi but had to add the unlimited international data plan ($40) on top ($70 total for data). I found that the two carriers in Singapore that my Verizon Storm 2 can connect too have very bad coverages and maybe too much traffic (got plenty of messages about limited capacity on network, try later). I decided to check out WiFi and found it worked great at my appartment and office so I decided to drop the international data plan and as Verizon have introduced the limited data plan ($15) I went for it as I wasn't using any US data. Note: You need to have some form of data plan to use WiFi.

To avoid running up a large data bill while roaming and away from a hot spot make sure you set 'data services while roaming' to 'Off'. Bottom line it's saving me $55/month.
