does anyone know of a clear and coherent way
of transferring an address book from one phone to a
    new one?

Nokia file manager is essentially a waste of space

It seems to me that this should be a simple procedure
but this seems to be not the case as the sim card can
only ever be in one phone at any given time

Would be very grateful for any coherent advice that
could be passed on to the people I know who need
    to do this

Copy your addressbook to your simcard, from there you should be able to transfer it back to the other phone you put your sim in.

I copied my addresses from a Nokia 6021 (all multiple numbers per name, so they can't transfer thru the SIM which only supports one per name) to a Notes database using the Nokia PC Suite. Then copied the data into an empty names.nsf before syncing with my 8700. Worked a treat.

Presumably you could do something similar with Outlook.

Your best bet would be to sync your Nokia with MS Outlook, then sync the Blackberry to it as well.
