Consumer Misconceptions About Owning a BB
so i was talking to a few in laws the other week that have the original droid smartphone and were due for an upgrade.
i said what about the 9930? they immediately came back and said they didnt want to pay the extra $30 on top of the data fee. i told them that's not how it works. i said the BIS plan is a data plan and that it wouldn't cost any extra monthly than their droid.
i didn't think anything of it. just thought they were an unusual case of non educated smartphone owners.
in the recent weeks i have talked to alot of people since i am a cable guy and i am in about 10 homes a day and pretty much 80% of people have the same idea.
they complain about their battery life on their older iphone or android phone and say they want to upgrade to something new. again as usual i rep the bold and they said the same thing. they don't want to pay 2 data fees.
i know carrier salesmen and women are tough enough to get ver to the blackberry section of the back corner of the store but this is another huge misconception that i feel is just another factor in the lowering rim numbers.
i dont know how they will market bb10 but i hope they can sneak in the commercials that it will work with any standard data plan.twitter: @eve6er69_chris - 04-16-2012, 11:50 PM #2

the vast majority of people where i live don't know that RIM owns BB. or what CDMA/GSM are. they just didn't know what BIS is or that it existed so there was nothing to get confused about LOL

Here in Australia generally special plans for bb that are reasonably competitive.
Biggest issue is that none of the many mvno's (virtual operators) including TPG, liveconnected and redbullmobile support Bis.
Without bis, the blackberry is near useless unless in wifi zone.
Android is definitely winning the cheap device no contract space. - 07-18-2012, 06:04 AM #9

I disagree
if you asked 100 Canadians who Research in Motion was 99 would think it had something to do with buses.
BlackBerry is the brand the people know, and it also isn't well known that it is a Canadian company unless you're a tech enthusiast, or follow the business section in the news paper.oops...

I probably had a 2 hours conversation about BluTooth head sets with my Alarm installer as I noticed how much he used his, coupled with a BBM group with other installers, they all talked while on the job about what they were doing/seeing/troubleshooting
IF you're in the need for a smartphone someone in the service/installation business IS a good person to ask for advice, that persons work life is out of their work truck, reception for them is important as is durability, battery life to a lesser extent as they can charge it regularly. Plus talking smartphones is more and more mainstream, as a sales guy who travels, I can say in some markets it is safer to bring up cellphones in conversation to personalize the interaction over a sports teamoops...

Well that's how it used to be (for Verizon). You would have to pay for your minutes and texts, then $30 for the data plan and an extra $30 just for it being a BlackBerry (like those people said). But now you don't. Just something that consumers don't know has changed.

I have an unlocked Blackberry Bold 9900. I searched on Tmobile website.
I think if I use Tmobile Monthly 4G plan. they will charge me 50 dollars for unlimited text, call, data and 10 dollars for blackberry internet service.
Is there any way for me to make the BIS together with data plan?
ThxHan.

Aren't most plans that aren't a bundle all for$ broken down to $ for calls, $ for text, $for data?

It seems like T-mobile doesn't really care that much about Blackberry sales. After Apple dumped T-mobile, they concentrate their sales work on Android phones now, in my personal opinion. When I went to the retail store, they introduced the latest android phones. (Obviously they have no idea that I'm a big fan of BB
)

Yeah, I am also paying extra BIS fee (about USD 10/month) to Smartone in Hong Kong on top of the usual monthly plan for call/text/data. It does cost some BB users more depending on where you are.
Without paying the BIS fee, I cannot even use the browser on wifi. The browser icon was simply not even there, let alone emails or app world. I blame the carrier for that....and I reckon they keep a portion of the BIS fee instead of passing it all to RIM. Suxker....but I love my BB so much I keep paying.....Sigh.....

As far as I know...there are three type of data plans...iPhone, BB, and general data plans.
IPhone users have to have an iPhone data plan for their device, BB users need a BB data plan. All other smartphones can use the general data plan.
Now...here's the extra info...as a BB user with a BB plan...I can use an Android phone and it will work flawlessly for general data on my BB data plan. No BBM or BB services, of course...but it will work just as it would on a standard data plan.
This way, there is no reason to change from a BB data plan to an Android data plan if you switch phones. IPhone is limited only to iPhones. At least this is what I have come to understand. If Eve had given Adam a Blackberry, the world would be paradise. Instead, she gave him an Apple. Look at us now. - 07-19-2012, 12:59 AM #23
BIS Plan
Well here in Singapore BB BIS plans do cost more than regular data plans..

In my country, it's also usually more expensive to have a bb instead of other smartphones, as BB data plans are usually charged as a "value added service" on top of a user's existing mobile plan. Since most people already have smartphones (145% mobile penetration rate here, of which 72% are smartphones), it usually makes more sense to get a non-bb smartphone rather than to pay extra per month to use a bb. Perhaps that's why bb isn't as popular as it could have been in the consumer space here.

Boost Mobile charges $10 a month more for Blackberries. I am not sure if AT&T does or not since I handed over paying the cell phone bill over to the wife a long time ago.
