All one has to do is look at Walmart parking lot to see them full of vehicles and people shopping and buying off shore products made in sweat factories overseas. Today people only care about the price, just wait 10 to 15 years from now when Mexico starts getting organised by labour unions there will be a mass exit by manufacturers looking for the next country to take advantage off .

Workers line up to work at Foxconn because landing a job their IMPROVES their lives so dramatically.

If they aren't hired at Foxconn, the alternative is not a job at Allstate as a customer service rep. China doesn't have a lower leisure class like the US that watches Netflix until the EBT cards arrive.

They get a factory job at Foxconn or work extremely dangerous and low compensated backbreaking subsistence labor.

Our insistence that these factories offer levels of wages and conditions found in the civilized world only reduces the number of workers who are pulled up into an industrialized life.
When Foxconn reduced the schedule for the workers at the IPhone line following the global cries, A lot of workers at that line complained about making less money and demanded they get their hours back.

Something that I am still not able to understand, and one that I made a thread about earlier is the Classic being made in China.

The press release that Blackberry had and the quarterly conference call saying that Blackberry's made by Foxconn would be made at various facilities except China for security purposes .

The Classic is made in China and when I asked for added information from Blackberry's Investor Relations Department I was told "We continue to manufacture the Blackberry Classic in North America for our Government and Regulated industry customers"

When pressed for clarification it appears that the consumer Classic is built in China and for Government and regulated industries probably built in Mexico.

Just something I found quite interesting to say the least.

Interesting. Is the Verizon Wireless Classic made in Mexico for all units or do they still somehow do the split?

Funny thing is the more we judge the way other nations treat the factory employees for jobs that we would never do. You would not want your child or parent working on an assembly line yet we continue to complain about what over sovereign nations do to help their economy's.

I am not 100% sure where everyone's Classic is built. How I kind of stumbled upon this was seeing my friends Rogers Classic box. It said "Made in China" and I was shocked since the Foxconn relationship was never suppose to be a Chinese one for security.

Yes, they are rational. They travel hundreds of miles to work and want to work as much as possible while they are away.

But we step in and "help" them. Crazy, cruel, egotistical. But we feel so GOOD about "DOING SOMETHING".

Must feel good to know some BB phones were "assembled" in Mexico. What about the parts? Where they manufactured in Mexico as well or in sweat factories in China?

As for BB phones made in Indonesia - BlackBerry has no choice because Indonesia I think has a requirement for phones to be assembled there, some percentage of units made I think

Yeah, I believe Foxconn is making them now and that's one reason why they're beginning to look like the competition.

What is bothering is that everyone is using Foxconn for manufacturing devices. And they are overlooking the reports of working conditions and suicides by the workers.

The CLASSIC is M.I.C. and distributed all over the globe... No difference between America and Asia.
The CLASSIC is not a high-end make.

A few years back, Apple was under fire for it's factory conditions in China. Does anyone have any reports on where current BlackBerry phones are made, specifically the Classic and original Passport? I don't think they're made in Canada.

Did anyone read about the conditions of the factories? I know many people comment on the quality of the classic compared to the quality of the 9900. Where was the 9900 made?
If you are really concerned about that kind of thing, you could try this phone. It is actually not a bad phone at all. It is called Fairphone

    https://www.fairphone.com/phone/

For me though, I do care about the conditions of the workers, but not enough to use Android for it.

Yep... i just saw this phone mentioned in a Chinese tech page earlier... very very interesting indeed, especially when it comes to repair, we can always DIY.
However the price... is going to be a tough one for the company... when it comes to getting attentions from budget-tight crowds worldwide.

I am sorry to say this, but the average consumer could care less where a product is made or by who, it's all about the bottom line (cost) these days.

I still look for Made in USA labels to support my fellow workers here, but the majority of folks just don't give a **** as long as the price is right.
Wait, you're saying it was the average consumer's decision on where things should be made and not the corporate suits? As an above-average consumer, which US-made smartphone do you use?

Along with a huge trade imbalance...

Chinese are sitting on over $1t in their vaults... and the US has to import money via debt every day to keep afloat!
    Got a source for that?

The Q10 and Z30 were pre-FoxConn... My T-Mobile Q10 was also not a sweatshopBerry... The Passport on the fringe of the partnership. The Z3, Classic and Leap catching the 'luck'... With Chen further diverting cash from hardware and moving to software the Canadian Berrys will cease to exist... Cheap Quality and Labor > Quality Build by Fair Labor to most CEOS these days... Corporate 101 it seems...

Perhaps if the Government would give tax credits for every manufacturing job created in Canada and the US, it would be affordable to make phones here where there are strict regulations.

We can take solace in the fact that they're probably just hanging around taking it easy most of the time, making about one device per day to meet demand.

No way...they are probably forced to stay even later to crank out about a dozen BB's after working two solid shifts making spyPhones.
