Can a BES administrator read my PIN and/or SMS messages and see my phone call logs?
Yes, if the BES is version 4.1 or newer and the device is o/s code 4.1 or later.- Starting with BES 4.1, the BES admin can log all PIN and SMS messages to the BES server, including the content of those messages.
- BlackBerry Messenger messages and conversations can also be audited by the BES administrator.
- In addition, the administrator can view all phone calls made/received to the device including date/time, number dialed, and the name of the person you are calling or who called you if that name is listed in your contact list.

When you are on BES you are on a leash...
-
... yes, but it's a leash you choose to wear, in exchange for a employer-provided phone and plan, inside-the-firewall access, and OTA sync of calendar, tasks, notes, and contacts.
When it's voluntary, and in exchange for access and services, it's a reasonable deal. And you can always buy your own personal phone with no restrictions whatsoever.
-
So BIS is free from all that, then?
-
Yes, if you are using BIS on a personal phone. BES plans include BIS. If you are on a BES, and using BIS, then I believe your BIS activity is still going through the BES servers and is potentially subject to monitoring. I'm not a BES Admin, so I don't know for sure.
It's also reasonable to assume that most BES admins have a lot more to do than just monitor users, so unless you've given them cause to be paying attention to you specifically, they likely aren't.

I agree that it is a bit scary, and big brother is watching.... BUT....
I agree with Jeff, that if the company is giving you the phone and paying for it, they should have the right to be sure it is being used for their business.

If your device is on a BES and your plan has access to BIS some of those functions can also be locked down and audited from the BES.
While some may think its Big Brother, companies in some cases have to be careful what is happening to their data, which is why some of these things are locked down or audited.
Worth noting that Text Messaging auditing is disabled by default on the BES, only calls are actually on by default.
Usually it would not be the BES admins that would want to be doing this, but the corporate security or compliance teams.
