It is supposed to charge. Usually it does. But there have been several reports of BlackBerries that wouldn't charge when plugged into a USB port, but charged normally from a wall-charger. Apparently the USB ports on some computers do not fully comply with the USB power standard of 5VDC @ 500mA. It's not one particular brand of PC, nor is it one particular model BlackBerry. It's probably a result of manufacturing tolerances in the BlackBerry charging circuit that cause it to require a little more power, coupled with a USB port that's underpowered. If you are experiencing it, about all you can do is try another USB port, or another computer. As was noted in another thread, using the-wall charger is always the best way to charge a BlackBerry.

I've found the same thing jeff stated to be somewhat common. My computer at work has two usb ports on the front. The top will charge it and the bottom one won't. I try to only use the wall charger though.

I have found the same thing as WallyJay, with my laptop. The two usb ports on the side will charge my phone, the two ports in the back won't charge my phone or power some USB devices if the two on the side are powering things.

If you have access to another computer, try it. Sometimes a USB port just doesn't have enough power capacity to charge a BlackBerry. Check the CrackBerry store for deals on spare wall chargers.

try elsewhere - 12-20-2009, 05:35 PM #11
I have one of those computers with two USB ports. One charges and one does not. A charging dock is on the way.

I've got three USB ports on my computer, two on the left and one on the right. They all work but it seems to charge really really slow, does this happen to anyone else? Am I better off just using the wall charger or a car charger.

That's normal. You will always see a device charge slower through a USB port or even through a car charger.

The computer will charge the BlackBerry albeit slower than a wall outlet charger or a car charger. It's also my understanding that you must have Desktop Manager installed (it doesn't have to be in use, but it has to be installed) on a computer for the charging feature to work.

Yes it will charge and if you download 'Blackberry Desktop' then you can update your OS, charge, backup and much more!

Yes, but it does seem like my phone takes longer to charge when I do use usb.

Well it should USB's do not give as much power as plugin it into a wall and getting 240v (UK) into it for it to charge as USB's throw at-least 5v out so thats why

Good to know! In the literature that came with my device (or maybe on the box my device came in), I think it said I had to install Desktop Manager to charge the device using the computer. I'll doublecheck just to satisfy my own curiosity.

If your battery is completely discharged, your computer's USB port may not be able to provide sufficient current to charge it. If it hasn't started charging by now, try a different port or a different computer. There can be considerable variation in the current capacity of a USB port. A different computer might charge it successfully.
