okay, very new to the BB and almost as new to texting. Every once in a while a page of "characters" pops up as I'm typing a text. I know it has to do with hitting a button as I type, but have no clue how to bring it up purposely. Any help out there?

The symbol button brings up the "characters." It's located adjacent to the space bar on my 8830. It's labeled 'SYM.'

on the 8310 is says $ and has the speakerphone on it. :)
Thanks. Now I know. :)
That is the '$' key, not the symbol key.
The 'sym' key brings up the Symbol page ;)
oh woops - DUH!! I knew that - really, I did! :)
I press the sym key to get symbols in sms texting and it brings up only one page with some weird symbols on it. On some phones here you can press it twice to get the full menu. I cant believe the curve only has around 10 symbols to use on the sym key. If I press the key twice it goes back to the msg compose screen. If I hit menu when the symbols are up it does nothing. What gives here, when I first got the curve I thought it came up with more symbols. I am using English on this one..

The other symbols are one the QWERTY keyboard.... no need to have them under the symbols
My 8830 has 26 symbols under the SYM key. I'd be surprised if you only had 10. There is only one page of symbols on mine as well. I imagine that's standard on all BlackBerries.

My 8330 has only 15 on the SYM key. On occasion I need Spanish, Danish, and German punctuation, is there a simple way to access those through the SYM key or just add them to that menu?
You can get a wide variety of special characters, accent marks, etc. by holding down a letter key and rolling the trackball. Try it and you'll see. I don't have a complete list, but there's probaly one somewhere.
