CBC's "Apple's Broken Promises"
- There's a CBC documentary on now about how Apple has terrible working conditions for the Chinese workers that make their iPhones. Does BlackBerry do the same thing?
Posted via the Z30 on CB1001-25-15 07:49 PMLike 3 - The CBC investigator interviewed an Indonesian that was former head of tin mining, and he said a lot of the tin was illegally mined and Apple bought a lot of it. Ironically, this guy was holding a BlackBerry Bold!

- It's on at 11pm tonight again, just saw the end of it earlier . It was on CBC news channel 1502 on Bell.
Posted via CB1001-25-15 08:28 PMLike 0 - Apple uses Foxcon to manufacture their Phones that company has a very poor record of human rights abuses in their Chinese factories. Blackberry has signed a deal with Foxcon to manufacture the Z3, with future considerations for other models.

The big wheel of capitalism and corporate greed will continue to roll along. I have watched our once mighty manufacturing base here in the USA get gutted and shipped off to other countries for the sake of corporate greed and cheap slave labor and those politicians in our capital let it all happen.
Sent from my lovely Classic on T Mobile USA01-26-15 03:46 AMLike 20 - We have to keep in mind the other side of the coin: those companies are providing jobs for a lot of people that have no better alternatives.
If Apple would not buy from those companies, there will be others buying from them or competing with them by using even worse working conditions. How do you think the costs of Chinese high-specs Android phones are kept so low?
Realistically, the alternative is more between bad (work for a half-scrutinized Apple supplier) and worse (work in an anonymous slave shop).
I saw another documentary about Pakistani working in sports equipment factories producing soccer balls. When the work practices were denounced as abusive in the Western media, the big brands canceled their contracts with the factories, resulting in mass unemployment in the area (tens of thousands of people reduced to begging).
In the Pakistani case, the accusations were denied by the factory owners, who accused the NGOs involved of forging the evidence in order to gain international attention and get more funding (one of the alleged forgeries was a picture of small children sewing a leather ball - which would be impossible to do because the leather is very hard).
In conclusion:
1. Always take into account what the alternative may be for the working people involved (instead of better working conditions, the alternative might be starvation)
2. Keep an eye on the real interests of those making the noise. Oxfam International, which might be the largest of those noisy do-gooders, spends around half from what it gets from donations and state grants on its own staff - and we are talking here about tens of millions of dollars, maybe hundreds of millions.
The results of these apparently selfless NGO actions are more often than not the impoverishment of the "helped" ones and the enrichment of those NGOs higher staff.Last edited by serbanescu; 01-26-15 at 05:06 AM.

If enough consumers stopped purchasing products made in countries that allowed this abuse then the manufacturers would have to find alternate solutions. This of course means our gadgets would be a lot more expensive.
If there is one company in the world that could afford to build their products in North America, that would be Apple given their market position and prices that they charge for their things. Alternatively, they could improve working conditions for a small dent in their profit margins.
One more reason to buy BlackBerry. Their phones for the North American market are built in North America (Mexico). Ya the z3 is built by Foxconn in Asia, but that is only for the Asian markets.

As stated by others, it's unfortunate that any company that sells products at such a huge profit (such as Apple with their huge margins) would have such deplorable conditions for the employees. And it's crazy that people don't care... all they want is their phones. Do you all remember when Nike was put through the mud for their sweatshops? Why don't more people stand up and demand change?01-26-15 09:30 AMLike 0 -

Apple could do better, but you won't see any competitors cast any stones.
LOl @ BlackBerry does it, but only does it to them. Yay! We use the "good" Foxconn!anon(832122) likes this.01-26-15 09:55 AMLike 1 - It's interesting that the working conditions at Foxconn are well documented yet BlackBerry just recently chose to do business with them. For those of you saying that the working conditions are some how better at the BlackBerry Foxconn plant (workers probably bored from lack of work) compared to the Apple Foxconn plant need to take your head out of the sand. This is Foxconn's business model. There are a ton of companies that jump at getting their products made as cheap as possible:
Acer Inc. (Taiwan)
Amazon.com (United States)

Although the Passport is made by Foxconn, it's not made in the same facility that's known to have terrible working conditions as the iPhones. It's made in a Mexican facility which I would hope offers better working conditions.

I don't think the Passport is made by Foxconn. I don't think any of their keyboard based devices will be. I would imagine BlackBerry is probably (justifiably) terrified that their keyboard components will be cloned if they outsource it to FoxConn.
Posted via CB1001-26-15 09:58 AMLike 0 - I guess, a more inhumane way to think about this whole thing,...
Is that the entire ultra-low labor cost business model of FoxConn (and China in general) has only been made possible by the massive population size of the country.
There are just too many people, which consequently means that there are too many available man-hours, thus making each one worth mere fractions of a penny.
How can anyone expect any human resource management improvement when their human resources are individually worth almost nothing? If you buy an expensive luxury car you are more likely to care for it and wash it than if you buy a cheapo base model corolla beater. Same thing.
Except for the part that they are humans,.. but... we wouldn't be able to sleep soundly at night if we really accepted that.
