We are sending in our Q5 for repair, so in preparation I've backed everything up, deleted pics, deleted email, FB accounts, etc. I want to sign out of BBID but can't seem to. I saw a thread that suggested deleting one of the OS files, but it seems to me that signing out of BBID should be possible. Otherwise, BBM is still connected to the phone at the repair shop.

You have to do a security wipe to clear the BBID off the phone.

If they give you a loaner, put your BBID on it and the BBM will transfer to the loaner.
