I;ve tried with att tech support as well as bb tech support with no avail. It appears to be a problem with the modem as when i'm directed by tech support to check standard modem in the device manager folder the computer screen crashes and the computer immediately shuts down.

Have you tried BlackBerry Desktop Manager v5.0.1?

One of the features is Tethering.
