You can try going to options, screen/keyboard, and make Font Stlye: Bold.

I believe this will make all text bold; not specific to just unread mail.

I didnt think of this til you posted it. On my Pearl, all my email is bold unless I read it, then it's no longer.

must be theme-specific then. all of my unread messages were bold when i was using the today plus theme, but ever since switching to the boldberry theme my unread messages don't show up bold any more.

You could highlight the e-mail or txt hit the menu button and mark it as unread. Just like outlook.
