I know I can sync to outlook express for my contacts, and save my songs and stuff, but can I just to a backup to my PC from my Curve, then to a restore to my new (hopefully soon) Storm? Or will the new OS prevent this?

You should be able to restore with no issue.

Yep, Using DM it has an option to backup and it saves it on your desktop or wherever you want to. Then you just use DM to restore!!
You can just use the "Switch Device Wizard"
I used the Switch Device wizard to go from my Curve to the Bold. It worked, except several of my 3rd party apps had to be reinstalled to work properly with the new screen format. Also, some games came preloaded (Klondike for example) and I ended up with 2 copies. Be prepared.
