    Default Calling all geniuses...Service Books

I've seen several threads lately that talk of the accidental deletion of native or OEM apps that are preloaded to a particular phone by a given carrier. My question is:

Will a resend of service books replace the entire program in those cases? I've always believed that service books were more of a set of instructions for programs to refer to, if you will. Or...

Do the individual programs need replaced as an independent step and/or a reload of the OS is necessary.

I've seen this question arise somewhat frequently in the subforums and there seems to be a lack of consensus on the answers.

service books enable the app, so if you deleted the app itself, you'll need to reload via desktop manager or loader.exe.

By way of a restore operation or other? If not, where would one load these types of things from? I'm thinking of things like BB messenger, e-mail setup application, tasks, etc that accidentally get removed.

when you go through dm, it will give you a list of the apps in the os and you can check or uncheck as appropriate to add/remove the apps.

Ok, so when you initially hook up your BB to DM, does it auto store a copy of all those programs then? I always thought DM was just reading what it was CURRENTLY seeing on the phone. So then if a program were deleted from the phone, it would not show up in that list any longer.

No, DM sees the OS that's been downloaded and installed to your PC, then checks which apps are on your bb, then allows you to add or remove apps on the bb. So, if you've deleted the Tasks app, for instance, on the bb, then open dm and plug in the bb, you'll see that Tasks is listed, and if you check the box, the action item will change to Add.

Excellent. Thank you for your help on this. I was unaware DM was basically keeping a running history of apps. I assume that is specific to the pin? So if one were to get a new phone, that app list would no longer be in play with the same copy of DM?

And finally, to dovetail one last time, is there any way to eliminate an app from DM altogether. Say something you know you never want again so that it doesn't even show up as an option anymore when connected?

I just reread your previous post and you had mentioned DM sees the OM thats' been downloaded and installed to the PC. Do you mean there has to be a physical effort to install the OS on the PC or DM pulls it from the phone as a sort of "ghost" copy of the OS that's on the phone? Just want to make sure we aren't missing each other because I'm figuring not everyone has physically loaded the OS onto their PC as a separate step. I do keep a copy of mine there but I'm guessing many people simply have the phone with the preloaded OS on it and that's it.

you need to download and install the device os to your pc.

for your previous question, yes, you can make it disappear from the app choices in dm (once you've installed the device os to your pc) by removing the proper cod files.

In the past, I've had the OS software just saved in my documents but never opened it. Just keeping it there to save download time if I needed a fresh version. So now I opened and installed it. I really see no place to access all the files however. Where on my machine can I access the cod files and the sort? Does it have to be done through DM with the phone hooked up at the time or can you navigate directly to the root files on the PC in some fashion without the phone in play?

Now that it's installed, open DM, plug in your bb. If you want to see the cod files themselves, go to My Computer, Program Files, Common Files, Research In Motion, Shared, Loader Files, os folder, Java.
