Speculation here... But I saw a report that cell service in the area was shut down after the non-detonated devices were found, leading to a possibility that the devices were detonated remotely by cell phone.

The source I read it was not official though... So take that as you will.

I saw that too. I'm thinking it was more of a precaution in case cell phones were used; I think it's way too early for anybody to have any idea how it was done. I don't know if or how that would have impacted BB alerts.

Thoughts and prayers to all who were affected.

I wouldnt jump to conclusions as to the BB being able to communicate over other devices, but it may be true. Just hoping that everyone is ok, including your 'kids'.
Kids are fine thanks. Could well be the shut down as daughter is in the city limits, son is further out.

I have to do a retraction, as Verizon Wireless and Sprint have now said that there was no request to shut down service.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the Boston area. Here's to a speedy recovery for the injured and comfort for those who lost loved ones.

Doesn't mean Homeland Security or FCC didn't simply "block" all cell phone traffic in a specific area. They have mobile vans that can do this.

On CBC it was reported that police were simply asking people to not use their cell phones, except to dial 911. I guess all this stuff will come out in the next few days. A little patience and we should know soon.

What is the emergency alerts for? I would have liked to know about this.

A quick Google search and you woul dhave read the following indicating it is a CARRIER issue :

    How does WEA work?

Pre-authorized national, state or local government may send emergency alerts regarding public safety emergencies, such as evacuation orders or shelter in place orders due to severe weather, a terrorist threat or chemical spill, to WEA.

Alerts from authenticated public safety officials are sent through FEMAs IPAWS to participating wireless carriers.

Participating wireless carriers push the alerts from cell towers to mobile devices in the affected area. The alerts appear like text messages on mobile devices.

im sure that this is not on anyones lists of things to check right now. human lives and safety come first, if we hear news about this later or not doesnt really matter... as long as people are safe.

As a person, who more times than not exhaust Google search before posing a question on CB for fear some assclown will suggest that I do a simple search. I am truly sorry that I wasted your time for having you do the search for me.

Thank you for being johnny come lately with answer in a somewhat rude way!

This is from my Z10 help screen. Basically, it's up to your carrier as to whether you get them or not.

Public warning systems are used to send alert messages to users with enabled mobile devices. Public warning messages are text messages that alert users of possible threats to safety in their area. Messages may include severe weather warnings, missing child alerts, or national emergencies.

Depending on your wireless service provider, public warning messages don't contribute to data usage in your wireless service plan. This feature might not be supported, depending on your region, service provider, and wireless network. For more information, contact your service provider or administrator..

I've only had the Emergency Alert Message feature go off a handful of times and most of them were in one evening back in October when I was in Las Vegas during some pretty severe weather. The first time it went off, it freaked me out as I wasn't expecting it even though I had heard a weather radio going off in a office just off of the casino floor at Paris. It went off a couple of more times for flash flood warnings (I had turned the sound profile on my phone to off because I was at a show and learned about them after the show.). A few months back it went off during some severe weather here in the Atlanta area in which several counties had tornado warnings issued. I was in one of those counties (which has an extensive siren network) and as I was leaving the place I ate lunch at, the sirens were going off and about a minute later, my phone went off.

I've got the Amber Alert option unchecked because my phone would be going off at least once or twice a week.....

It would alert you to stay away from the area. Say you're in a coffee shop working on a project on your laptop and not consuming any media, and you're getting ready to leave for an area that just had a bomb go off, gas explosion, etc. An alert on your phone would warn you not to go near that area.

A couple months ago there was a gas explosion in an area of my city that I go to several times a month for shopping and dining. I hadn't planned on going that night, but an alert on my phone would've warned me what had happened. As it was, I didn't hear about it right away because I was reading a book and a friend texted me about it, making sure I wasn't there.
If you did happen to head over to that area I can assure you Police would have stopped you if it was after the fact.

I've never received an emergency alert. I wonder if Canada has a similar system. Off to Google I go....

Edit: no such policy or program exists in Canada on the federal level.

Hmmm for those talking about text alerts... they won't work anyway... or won't be timely cause the cell towers are already having a hard time with the inflow of traffic.

I don't know how emergency alerts works
Pretty sure I'd read that the emergency alerts are basically a broadcast, meaning they'd go out with a single transmission to all devices accessible from a given cell tower. If true that would be very efficient, and certainly a better method than individual text alerts from any other source. (They could ultimately reduce traffic overall, since people wouldn't be loading the system as much just to find out the nature of the problem.)

I got one once on my old 9910 for an Amber Alert. At 2:15 in the freaking morning, even though I was in bedside mode. Needless to say, I quickly learned how to turn the feature off and did so.

I hear they used to send them out for Silver Alerts in Florida. They had to stop after people complained about their phones going off every five minutes. Thank you, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress.

I have a son and daughter in Boston, son has a 9930, daughter has an S3. Having no problem BBM'ing son but daughter wasn't responding to Txt, she eventually responded to an email when she got home, said the phones were out or the network jammed as she hadn't received any txt.
I live in Boston and can confirm firsthand that all cell towers in closest proximity to the blast zone were disabled to prevent remote detonations.
It was basically just the downtown Boston area and assuming they were both in that area the loss in coverage was consistent amongst all carriers and devices.

Was the tornado alert for a watch or warning? I'm in a tornado watch right now and I haven't gotten an alert, so I'm guessing it was for a warning? Or are my alerts not working?
